Update February 3, 2014–The Nearshore public workshop on the North Shore has been rescheduled for Friday, February 7 from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Tahoe City PUD.
The South Shore meeting that occurred on Thursday, January 30 at the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board offices was attended by nearly 50 people despite winter road conditions.
South Lake Tahoe, CA – The Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, along with the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, invite members of the public to participate in upcoming meetings focused on assessing the condition of Lake Tahoe’s nearshore environment.
The nearshore is the part of Lake Tahoe that residents and visitors interact with most while enjoying the lake’s shores and waters. It extends from the shoreline out 350 feet into the lake, or to a depth of 69 feet, whichever is further. The Nearshore Evaluation Report, completed last fall by the Desert Research Institute, the University of Nevada at Reno, and the University of California at Davis, describes the current understanding about the nearshore and the changes it is experiencing. These meetings are an opportunity to learn more about the Nearshore Evaluation Report and what the agencies are doing to monitor, protect and improve nearshore conditions.

The presentations at the meetings will be identical and will include a synopsis of the Nearshore Evaluation Report. Lahontan Water Board staff will also present an overview of the Lahontan Water Board’s draft Nearshore Implementation Plan, the agency’s response to changes in the nearshore described in the Nearshore Evaluation Report. The public is invited to ask questions and provide input into the process of restoring Lake Tahoe’s nearshore conditions and will be provided with information on what individuals can do to help.
