Media Release–2004 Best in the Basin Awards

(Stateline, NV) – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) commended the winners of the 2004 Best in the Basin Awards today during the
Governing Board meeting at the North Lake Tahoe Conference Center in Kings Beach.
The awards were distributed to each project owner and recognized several outstanding Lake Tahoe projects in multiple categories, including residential, commercial, public
service, erosion control, restoration, and shorezone/shoreland projects.
“The Best in the Basin Awards highlight environmental improvements on properties
around Lake Tahoe,” said Julie Regan, Communications Director, TRPA. “The awards
also help to serve as a guideline for future projects and set a standard of excellence.”
This year’s Best in the Basin recipients include:
- BMP Retrofit – 6631 North Lake
Boulevard, Tahoe Vista, CA; - Commercial Modification – The Front Porch, 8703 North
Lake Blvd, Kings Beach, CA; - New Commercial – USFS Supervisor’s office, 35 College
Drive, South Lake Tahoe, CA; - Commercial Rebuild – Ernie’s, 1207 Emerald Bay Road,
South Lake Tahoe, CA; - Recreation/Public Service – USFS, Inspiration Point, Emerald
Bay, CA; - Erosion Control – Kingsbury General Improvement District, Kingsbury Village
Erosion Control Project, Stateline, NV; - New Residential – 9781 Brockway Springs Drive,
Brockway, CA; and - Best Available Technology – Tahoe Keys Homeowner’s
Association, 356 Ala Wai, South Lake Tahoe, CA.
Additional award categories this year include Restoration and Shoreland/Shorezone
projects. The Restoration award was received by the California Tahoe Conservancy for
the Upper Truckee River and Wetland Restoration Project located on the Cove East
property at the end of Venice Drive in South Lake Tahoe, CA. This project is the first
phase of the restoration of the Upper Truckee marsh and river.
The Shoreland/Shorezone award was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Brock Settlemier for
blending their pier into the natural landscape in Tahoe City, CA.
Created 15 years ago by the TRPA, the Best in the Basin Awards are designed to
highlight projects demonstrating exceptional planning, design, and compatibility with the
environment. Area professionals in the fields of architecture, landscaping, planning,
engineering, and resource management judged each category.
In addition to project owners receiving an award for their efforts, duplicates of the
certificates, which include a picture of the project and the names of the primary
contractors who worked on it, will be hung in the front office of the TRPA building for
public viewing.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency cooperatively leads the effort to preserve, restore,
and enhance the unique natural and human environment of the Lake Tahoe region now
